12 sustainable swimwear brands for the best summer

We’re in the midst of a rainy, crazy summer. Personally I didn’t have many chances to get out to the beach and take a swim. To be honest, so far I’ve only swum once in The Netherlands. However, I’m looking forward to change that here in France. I’m looking forward to once again wear my sustainable swimwear and some bikinis I’ve sewn myself.

To help you too to find the perfect ethical, sustainable and slow fashion swimsuit, I’ve created this list with 12 ethical brands that will help you create the best summer.

Melich

First in the list is Melich, an ethical swimwear brand based in Barcelona. They are creating contemporary pieces focusing on timeless design, fit and the quality of our materials. The material they use to produce all pieces is a swimwear fabric which is made in Italy using Q-NOVA® technology. This is an environmentally sustainable polyamide fiber obtained exclusively from regenerated raw materials. All pieces are then designed, dyed and produced in Barcelona.

Éternel Éphémère

If you haven’t already heard of Éternel Éphémère, I recommend reading this in-debt blog post about it. Éternel Éphémère is a young high-end and ethical French lingerie, and now also swimwear brand based in Paris. All the pieces are handmade to order by Manon, the designer. She uses traditional Calais lace and fabrics to create extraordinary high-end pieces.

Isole e Vulcani

This Italian swimwear brand brings sustainable swimwear to another level. Everything at Isole e Vulcani is made of organic cotton and elastane. When you don’t like synthetic fibers, this one will be your favourite.

Organic Basics

You’ve probably heard of Organic Basics at some point in you sustainable fashion journey. This Danish brand offers sustainable and ethical basics – such as underwear, sportswear and jeans – for the starting ethical consumer. Since spring 2021, they now also offer sustainable swimwear. Their swimsuits are made with recycled plastic from oceans and landfil. Besides that, it also provides UPF 50+ sun protection and is sun lotion and chlorine resistant.

Now in Rio Swim

Now in Rio Swim is a born in Brazil and made in Portugal. Their mission is to create beautiful, functional swimwear for women to suit up and explore the world with confidence, beauty, and ease. They do this through quality, ethical, eco-friendly products that are ready to stick with you through your wildest adventures. All pieces are reversible and super comfortable, so you can get really active in them.

Augustine Amsterdam

Augustine Amsterdam is, surprisingly enough, a Dutch swimwear brand. It was born out of a desire to create the perfect fitting bathing suit in a responsible way. That implies slow fashion, with a sustainable production process; based on a 100% recycled Nylon yarn made from up-cycled fisherman’s nets, and ethically made garments that last.

AMLUL

Then we have AMLUL, a slow fashion brand, offering sustainable swimwear for a colourful summer. The brand is based in the concepts of ‘seasonless’, made in Spain, responsible consumption and ethic production. All garments serve women who are looking for high quality, limited edition but affordable pieces.

Paloma Wool

Maybe you’ve already came across Paloma Wool in one of my monthly favourites of 2020. This Spanish brand, based in Barcelona fights the fashion industry by working together with artists. They encourage responsible shopping and create pieces with easy and sensible care requirements for sustainable and longworthy quality. All items are unique and definitely made to stand out.

Riot Swim

Riot Swim is an black owned sustainable swimwear brand. They offer an exclusive collection of bikinis, one piece swimsuits, and more, that are equally sexy as flattering. Riot Swim was founded in 2016 in Los Angeles.

Clō Stories

Clō Stories is a sustainable Barcelona based brand launched in June 2017. They create pieces according the slow fashion movement, which means they have a focus on natural and sustainable garments, ethical production and sustainable design. All their pieces are reversible, so that you can mix and match them to create your perfect swimsuit that adapts to your body and makes you feel comfortable. Everything is designed and made in in Barcelona, from locally sourced materials.

Ruby Moon

Ruby Moon is a British activewear and swimwear brand, with a special focus on comfort and sustainability. The brand’s team is an international female team, that believes in the concept of women empowering women, to live healthy and sustainably. Sustainability comes in many forms, including wearing the same piece on different occasions. Therefore, all of Ruby Moon’s pieces are possible to wear from the gym to the beach. And besides that, they use the fabric ECONYL, which is a sustainable regenerated nylon fibre.

Ina Swim

Ina Swim is a sustainable swimwear brand from Australia. Everything they produce is made from high quality fabrics. For example, their swimsuits are made from Econyl, a sustainable fabric coming from consumer waste. They offer products for women, as well as for children.

Hope this list was helpful! Let me know which one is your favourite 🙂 Have a great summer!
